LEADERS FROM
EMERGING ECONOMIES ARE VISITING CHINA FOR THE ‘BELT AND ROAD INITIATIVE’ FORUM
Under the Belt and Road
Initiative, Chinese companies have undertaken the construction of vital
infrastructure such as ports, roads, railways, and power plants across various
nations. The goal is to facilitate trade and development on a global scale. However,
the large-scale development loans provided by China have left some less
economically robust countries struggling with the burden of debt.
The third Belt and Road Forum,
which is the focal point of this occasion, is expected to witness a flurry of
diplomatic activities. High-profile meetings, such as the one between Hungarian
Prime Minister Viktor Orbán and Chinese President Xi Jinping, have already
taken place. This forum follows previous gatherings in 2017 and 2019,
highlighting the continued importance of the initiative in global affairs.
Kenyan President William Ruto
is one of the leaders in attendance, and he will be seeking additional loans to
rejuvenate stalled road projects in his country. This request comes despite
Kenya's already considerable public debt. Additionally, Kenya aims to negotiate
more flexible repayment terms for a Chinese loan associated with a railway
project that has yet to prove its commercial viability.
Russian President Vladimir
Putin is also expected to make an appearance at the forum, as are
representatives from the Taliban government in Afghanistan. It's worth noting
that despite concerns about China's growing influence in Central Asia through
the Belt and Road projects, Putin downplayed the idea of competition. He highlighted
the alignment between China's Belt and Road Initiative and Russia's vision for
the development of the Eurasian Economic Union.
Notable leaders who arrived in
Beijing on Monday included Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed, Sri Lankan
President Ranil Wickremesinghe, Republic of Congo President Denis Sassou
Nguesso, Papua New Guinean Prime Minister James Marape, and Cambodian Prime
Minister Hun Manet. Their presence at the forum underscores the international
significance and relevance of the Belt and Road Initiative.
This gathering is not only a testament to the success of China's Belt and Road Initiative over the past decade but also an opportunity for participating countries to address concerns and seek opportunities for mutual benefit. As global leaders converge in Beijing, the world is watching with great interest to see how this initiative will continue to shape the future of international trade and development.
