Canada Accuses China Fighter Jets of 'Reckless' Interception of Military Plane

Canada's defence minister, Bill Blair, has raised concerns over a "dangerous and reckless" interception of a Canadian military plane by Chinese fighter jets. The incident occurred in international waters as the Canadian aircraft was participating in a UN operation to enforce sanctions against North Korea. The situation has sparked tensions and apprehension regarding international safety protocols.

Canada's Global News reported that a Chinese fighter jet approached within a mere five meters (16 feet) of the Canadian surveillance plane. While interactions between the Chinese air force and UN mission planes are not uncommon, this specific incident posed a significant risk to the Canadian crew.

Defence Minister Bill Blair expressed his deep concern over the unprofessional conduct exhibited during the interception. He stated, "It was quite frankly dangerous and reckless. And those types of behaviors are not ever acceptable, and we will express that to the People's Republic of China in the most appropriate way." However, he did not provide specific details about the forthcoming actions.

The incident occurred in international waters off the coast of China, and Global News had a crew on the Canadian plane at the time. Despite concerns raised by Canada, the Chinese embassy in Ottawa has not responded to requests for comment on the Global News report.

This recent episode is not an isolated one. In June 2022, Canada's military accused Chinese warplanes of harassing its patrol aircraft while monitoring North Korea sanction evasions. Such provocations have sometimes forced Canadian planes to alter their flight paths, adding another layer of complexity to international aviation safety.

The encounter over international airspace in the South China Sea, where a Chinese fighter jet executed an "unnecessarily aggressive" maneuver near a US military plane, has been cited by the Pentagon as part of a concerning pattern of increasingly dangerous behavior exhibited by Chinese military aircraft. These actions have contributed to mounting tensions and have raised questions about the necessity of ensuring proper conduct in international airspace.

As nations navigate complex international relations, the safety and security of military and surveillance operations are paramount. The recent incident between Canada and China underscores the importance of adherence to established safety protocols and responsible conduct in the global aviation arena. It remains to be seen how diplomatic channels will address and resolve these escalating issues.
